Remember back
in 1999 when that crazy bastard Shawn Fanning created one of the
most revolutionary/controversial pieces of software to date from
his dorm room? No we’re not talking about ICQ and no we’re not
talking about Sex Tracker – we’re talking about Napster.
Early after
Napster’s inception, it quickly took the internet and music
scene by storm. Many viewed Napster as an act of theft and that
anyone caught downloading music off this program was infringing
on the artists and companies copyright law. However most of us,
including myself viewed Napster as another technical revolution
of the internet! We all enjoyed surfing the easy to use
application for hard to find mp3’s and fill our hard drives with
its creamy goodness.
Unfortunately
for Shawn, and for its millions upon millions of users, Napster
was sued by many artists including Metallica. After about a year
of court room battles and some serious ass poundage, Napster was
shut down. However, this was only the beginning and a new-phase
of music downloading quickly waltzed into the scene! Popular
